Like many towns throughout Fife and indeed the UK, Kirkcaldy has changed tremendously over the last 80 years or so. Some of the changes have been for the better, with modern sanitation and vastly improved living condition for its residents. The modernisation has had its downsides, with the loss of several historic buildings such as Gladney House which was the birthplace of world famous architect Robert Adam.

One of his designs, Viewforth Towers, an 18th century mansion with circular rooms and two black marble Adam fireplaces, was demolished in 1955 and replaced with blocks of high flats. Images in this book include views of the newly built promenade, the Philp schools, the harbour, Cottage Hospital, Raith band contest, Chapel village and Ravenscraig Castle, as well as many scenes of the bustling High Street with privately owned shops long before the days of supermarkets and multiple stores.
